5 of the best user-built Bittensor apps
A showcase of the Bittensor community’s innovations, from price analytics to mindmaps and chatboards.
The sign of a thriving ecosystem is when its community feels empowered to interact, create, and build. But when people think about building on Bittensor, they usually envision working on subnets. Yet it’s not the only way to create within the space - and as the variety and volume of subnets continues to grow, the demand for tools and apps supporting user communities will increase, too.
Already, Bittensor users are designing and launching independent projects. Usually, these aren’t attached to any specific subnet, but rather designed for the whole community to use - enriching the space and showing others how to
1. Bittensortalk.org
Bittensortalk.org is a forum based on the old-school, retro aesthetic of Bitcointalk. Its minimalist, web1 look-and-feel fits naturally with its focus on community. Given that the Bittensor subreddit is still punching below its weight, Bitensortalk provides that conversational, thread-based chatboard experience that Discord - for all its strengths - doesn’t offer. Bittesortalk’s straight-talking forum addresses the gap.
But what really makes Bittensortalk stand out is its live chatroom. When you login, you can enter a text-chat with random people. Once commonplace on the internet, these chance encounter chatrooms are a dying breed - in crypto, AI, or otherwise. It’s refreshing to see Bittensor’s community maintaining the magic, freedom, and randomness of the internet as it once was.
2. Tao360
Tao360 is an information aggregation tool by Sam Pierre, that analyses documents, GitHub repos, Discord and X activity, and website data from each subnet and generates a valuation based on their insights. The data is compared to OTF’s own framework and standards, with each subnet graded as on a spectrum from overvalued, undervalued, or appropriately valued. And if there’s not enough data to draw a conclusion, it says so.
In a dTAO-world, Tao360 is an important app as more subnets are emerging, yet gathering intel on them is tricky. Now that each subnet is exposed to market volatility, checking a project’s pulse prior to investing pays off.
And although many tools perform similar analyses, when Tao360 first emerged in the middle of 2024, it sparked a wave of interest. Built by SubnetSam and her previous team at Wombo, Tao360 is now under the guidance of Crucible Labs - which we’ll allow, because Sami and co. are as Bittensor as it gets.
3. TAO.app
TAO.app is a trading analytics tool created by Latent Holdings, giving you a greater understanding of the Bittensor, TAO, and dTAO space. It provides a sum of all dTAO prices, a comparison between the amount of TAO injected in via the subnet vs total TAO reserves across liquidity pools, estimated root staking APY, number of TAO on root, and various other metrics.
This is ideal for when you need a granular view on indicators for health and investment throughout the network and wider sector. Perhaps the most interesting feature is its ability to show how much staked TAO is required in each subnet’s liquidity pool maintain its current alpha price for 72 hours - allowing users to better compare each subnet’s true health, rather than just its outward show.
4. Magellan
Magellan is a mapping out of the Bittensor ecosystem, created and maintained by Punisher TT. It gives a breakdown of the subnets, technical documentation, Bittensor’s core elements, and provides links to other important resources - all in one place. Again, when it launched in 2024, there wasn’t much like it in the ecosystem. And speaking for us at least here at Macrocosmos, it made us say: Why didn’t we do that?
It’s a great first port-of-call for anybody trying to get a handle on Bittensor’s diversity, especially if they’re not sure where to start. Tools like Magellan soften the technical complexity of the space, by making the ecosystem easier to explore. And if we want Bittensor to keep growing and gaining prominence, that’s a non-trivial task.
5. (One to watch) Dorm Builders Michigan University prediction markets tool
Dorm Builders is a hackathon set up by Dorm DAO where students from universities around the US collaborate to create products using blockchain technology. And the very first season of this competition launched with an exclusive focus on Bittensor, with all teams challenged to build something in our ecosystem.
The students are still working on their apps before releasing, but it’s still worth highlighting the competition itself as it progresses. One of the teams from the University of Michigan is working with SN6, Infinite Games, to create an agent designed for global market trading, using the subnet’s prediction and forecasting insights.
Talented students gain experience and exposure, top teams get more capacity to build: win-win.
Bittensor’s community: Distribution done right.
Bittensor’s known for having impressive and innovative people within it, but usually we look to the subnet owners for this. Looking beyond reveals the intelligence, skill, and commitment throughout the entire space. These apps are not created by large corporations, but rather by individuals who want to build on Bittensor out of curiosity and love of the tech: which is what this protocol has always been about.
